Understanding Light Sensitivity: What’s Normal and What’s Not

  • By:Dr. Katie Dugan

Do you find yourself squinting or feeling uncomfortable when exposed to the sun or bright lights? Light sensitivity (known as photophobia) is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. Minor symptoms cause discomfort, while major symptoms can result in severe pain even under normal lighting.

While it’s normal to experience occasional light sensitivity, if you notice that the symptoms are persistent or getting worse, then it could be an indication that you have an eye issue that needs treatment.

What is Normal Light Sensitivity?

It’s normal to experience a bit of light sensitivity in situations such as:

  • Stepping outside into bright sunlight after being indoors
  • Temporary sensitivity after your eyes have been dilated
  • Harsh indoor lighting that feels uncomfortable
  • Mild discomfort after looking at a bright screen

Usually, the discomfort will resolve quickly as your eyes adjust to the brightness in your environment. Just because you have a bit of light sensitivity, it doesn’t mean that you need to be concerned because it’s normal and expected.

When Light Sensitivity Isn’t Normal

But if you notice that the symptoms are severe and persistent, and your light sensitivity seems to be getting worse, then it could be an indication that you have an underlying problem. These are some of the warning signs that might indicate you should talk to an eye doctor for a professional diagnosis:

  • Light sensitivity is accompanied by headaches, redness, or watery eyes.
  • You have other eye conditions, such as dry eyes, corneal abrasions, or uveitis.
  • The sensitivity is associated with other medical concerns, such as medication usage or migraines.

If you have persistent or painful light sensitivity, then the best thing you can do is schedule an eye exam as soon as possible. Our expert team is here to help with your evaluation and diagnosis.

How an Eye Doctor Can Help with Your Light Sensitivity

When you schedule an appointment at our office, we start with a comprehensive eye exam to understand the overall health of your eyes. Our expert team can identify any underlying causes that might be contributing to your sensitivity, such as infection, inflammation, or eye diseases.

Once we understand why you are experiencing light sensitivity, then we can help with treatments to alleviate your discomfort. Available treatments might include wearing tinted lenses or using lubricating drops. Also, if there is an underlying eye condition, we will treat that issue to help you find relief.
