The Role of Regular Eye Exams in Detecting Neurological Conditions

  • By:Dr. Katie Dugan

Did you know that the eyes can give insights into other health conditions that a patient might be experiencing? When you schedule a comprehensive eye exam with our team, we are looking at much more than your vision.

A close examination of different parts of the eye can provide clues about other health issues that might need to be addressed. These eye exams show how well the communication pathways within the brain are working.

For example, the optic nerve is actually brain tissue. If there are changes to the optic nerve, then it could be an indication of changes that are happening neurologically. So, optometrists often spot the earliest warning signs before patients have any “serious” symptoms.

Eye Exams to Get Insights About the Nervous System

During your comprehensive eye exam, the eye doctor will perform a variety of tests to see how your eyes respond. We are looking at your pupil reactions, eye movement patterns, and how well you perform in visual field tests.

Additionally, an examination of the optic nerve can show if there is swelling, which could be an indication that you have swelling in other parts of your head. The optic nerve health can also provide clues about potential issues such as inflammation or tumors.

Neurological Conditions That Can Be Seen in the Eyes

Some of the neurological conditions that might be detected in an eye exam include:

  • Multiple sclerosis, because of sudden vision loss or neuritis in the optic nerve.
  • Strokes affect the eyes, causing visual gaps or difficulty tracking movement.
  • Both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s affect the eyes, causing changes to early visual processing and/or difficulty with depth and contrast.
  • Migraines can be related to the eyes because of temporary blind spots or visual patterns that happen during the migraine.

Schedule an Eye Exam, Even When Your Vision Feels “Fine”

A routine eye exam is much more than testing to see if you need glasses. These appointments are critical for your overall health, especially since certain complications can be detected in the early stages through an eye exam.

It’s essential to maintain consistency with your eye checkups. Early detection means that you can access faster treatment, which could help to reduce the risk of long-term damage or complications.
