The Importance of Regular Pediatric Eye Exams

  • By:Dr. Katie Dugan

You want your child to thrive in the classroom, which is why it’s critical to ensure that they can see clearly. The reality is that vision issues can have a domino effect on the child’s education, making it hard to keep up with their schoolwork if they can’t see the board or screen at school.

Regular eye exams are critical to support your child’s education and development. Not only is our eye care team here to make recommendations if your child needs vision correction lenses, but we also offer other diagnostic services and treatments to help your child maintain optimal vision throughout their life.

How Vision Impacts the Childhood Experience

If your child is struggling to read or falling behind in school, then vision care isn’t often the first thing that is considered. It’s possible that these performance issues could be related to the fact that the child is having a hard time seeing things in the classroom. These types of issues can also contribute to behavioral concerns, especially if the student is feeling frustrated because they are falling behind.

Most parents assume that their children will speak up if they can’t see. But the reality is that kids don’t often know what clear vision should look like, so they don’t realize that anything is wrong.

So, scheduling an eye exam for your child is more than getting the right glasses. These appointments are critical to ensure that your child is thriving in the classroom and all other areas of their life.

Why Early Detection is Critical in Childhood

The pace at which a child is developing is incredible. The social skills and education they learn each day, week, and month create a foundation for success in the future. If vision issues go undetected for a long period of time, then it can have a domino effect that disrupts the child’s progress now and in the future.

This is one of the reasons why early detection is critical. Regular eye exams are helpful for identifying common vision problems that could be impacting the child’s education and development. Not only do we check to see if the child needs vision correction lenses, but we also look at other factors such as eye tracking and lazy eye.

Remember: the earlier a problem is found, the easier it is to treat it successfully. We recommend that every child have their first eye exam by age 1, then again every 2 years (or as otherwise recommended based on the child’s unique needs).
