New Year’s Resolutions to Protect Your Vision in 2026 and Beyond

  • By:Dr. Katie Dugan

In most situations, vision changes happen slowly over time, which means that you might not notice a difference until the condition has progressed. In our modern world, our eyes are under more stress than ever before because of the many hours of the day staring at screens for work and entertainment.

It’s important that you are proactive about protecting your vision so that you can protect your eyes now and in the future. Here are a few resolutions that you might consider implementing for the new year:

Resolution #1: Pay Attention to Any Changes

If you notice any changes in your vision, then pay attention and talk to your eye doctor right away. Other symptoms that could be a concern include chronic headaches, squinting, and night vision problems. While eyes change over time, sudden and noticeable vision changes aren’t normal and should be checked as soon as possible.

Resolution #2: Manage Screen Time

Screens can’t be avoided, but there are ways that you can adjust your habits to alleviate digital eye strain throughout the day. Consider implementing the 20-20-20 rule to help your eyes relax and reduce fatigue from screen use. This means that you take a break from looking at the screen every 20 minutes. Make sure that you are looking at something at least 20 feet away and keeping your focus in the distance for a minimum of 20 seconds before looking back at the screen again.

Resolution #3: Wear Eye Protection

Not only do you need protective eyewear during high-risk activities, such as contact sports or while using power tools, but it’s also smart to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes during the day. UV exposure might be linked to the development of different eye diseases, and sunglasses can help to reduce long-term damage to your eyes.

Resolution #4: Schedule Your Eye Exam

When was the last time you had your eyes checked? Even if your eyes seem to be in good health, it’s important to make sure that you are scheduling consistent eye exams. Many eye diseases don’t have early symptoms, but an eye doctor can detect these conditions during a routine eye exam.

During the appointment, we will see if you need new glasses or contacts and also complete a comprehensive examination to evaluate your overall eye health. Then, early intervention treatments can be used if necessary.
