Holiday Foods that Promote Eye Health

The holidays are known for treats and indulgence. It’s time to pull out the family recipes, fill the candy bowls, and share these great memories with the people you love.

But just because you are enjoying novelty foods with your loved ones doesn’t mean that you can’t also focus on good health habits during this time of year. As you plan your meals and snacks, consider ways to add healthy ingredients to your food. You might be surprised to learn that some of your classic holiday favorites include ingredients that support your eye health!

Foods That Are Good for Healthy Eyes

If you want to protect your eyes, choose foods with specific nutrients such as antioxidants, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, zinc, and beta-carotene. It’s possible that your food choices could reduce the risk of eye health complications by as much as 25%!

Here are a few delicious holiday menu items that are great for your eye health:

  • Turkey: Roasted turkey is a staple for the holiday season, especially at Thanksgiving. Lean protein sources, such as turkey, are high in zinc, an important nutrient to support retinal health – which can reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.
  • Broccoli: Steamed broccoli or a broccoli casserole is a delicious way to add leafy greens to the holiday table. Broccoli is beneficial for the eyes because it contains antioxidants, vitamin E, and carotenoids like zeaxanthin and lutein.
  • Carrots: Beta carotene is always known as an essential nutrient to protect the eyes. Plan to serve carrots as a side dish. One delicious option is to roast them in the oven & drizzle maple syrup or honey on top, then sprinkle them with fresh dill.
  • Sweet Potatoes: This root vegetable not only tastes great as a holiday side dish but sweet potatoes are also loaded with beta-carotene. Additionally, they contain eye-protecting antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E.
