Advancements in Myopia Control: What Parents Need to Know

  • By:Dr. Katie Dugan

Clear vision is critical for people of all ages, but especially for children. During the early years of life, children depend on all of their senses, including hearing, to help with the learning process in activities that are happening throughout the day. As a parent, it’s important that you help your child maintain the best vision possible, which might include vision correction lenses and treatments from an experienced eye doctor.

Myopia: How it Impacts Children

Myopia is a condition that can affect children, but you might not know that their vision is affected without having a comprehensive eye exam. If a child has myopia, then it means that they have a hard time seeing objects that are far away.

The truth is that myopia is an increasing problem for children around the world. So, it’s critical to maintain regular eye examinations in order to catch myopia (and other potential eye diseases) in the earliest stages.

Modern Solutions for Helping with Myopia Control

Depending on the patient’s age, there are various treatment solutions that can be helpful in managing myopia. Some of the most common treatment options might include:

  • Ortho-K: Orthokeratology uses specialized contact lenses that help to reshape the cornea. These lenses are worn overnight. They usually aren’t recommended for young children since the patient needs to be old enough to care for the contact lenses.
  • Eye Drops: Certain medicated eye drops are sometimes recommended. This low-dose medication is helpful for slowing the progression of myopia. Even though myopia can’t be reversed, there are ways to reduce the speed at which the eyes are changing.
  • Multifocal Lenses: When an older patient needs help with near vision and far vision, then it might be recommended that they use multi-focal lenses.
  • Lifestyle Changes: These recommendations aren’t evidence-based treatments. But some industry experts suggest limited screen time and increased outdoor activities to help with vision.

Early Intervention Matters

As with all types of eye diseases, it’s critical to catch myopia in the earliest stages. When we diagnose this condition, then it’s possible to slow the progression of the disease. As a result, we might be able to reduce the need for stronger prescriptions in the future.

Our goal is to treat myopia as soon as possible in order to decrease the likelihood of complications in the future. When a child receives myopia treatments early, it has a positive impact on their overall quality of life.
